How to Perform Tawaf Step by Step
Tawaf — circling the Kaaba seven times — is the heart of Umrah. It's also the part first-timers find most intimidating: the crowds, the counting, the not-knowing-what-to-say. In practice it's simpler than it looks. Here's the whole thing, step by step.
Before you start
- Be in wudu. Tawaf requires ritual ablution — renew it before you begin, and again if it breaks mid-way.
- Be in ihram (if this tawaf is part of Umrah). See our full Umrah walkthrough for where tawaf fits.
- Men: uncover the right shoulder (idtiba) by passing the upper ihram cloth under the right arm. You'll keep it this way for the duration of tawaf.
The seven circuits, step by step
- Find the Black Stone line. Look for the green light on the wall marking the Black Stone corner (Hajar al-Aswad). Stand in line with it — you don't need to touch or kiss it; crowds make that impossible most of the time.
- Begin with Bismillah. Face the Black Stone, raise your right hand toward it, say Bismillah, Allahu Akbar ("In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest"), and start walking.
- Walk counterclockwise, Kaaba on your left. This is the direction — always. Keep the Kaaba on your left shoulder for all seven circuits.
- Men: walk briskly for the first three circuits (raml — a quick, short-stepped pace), then walk normally for the remaining four. Women walk at a normal pace throughout.
- Make dua as you walk. There is no fixed dua for tawaf — use your own words, in any language. Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone, it's Sunnah to recite Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah… (Qur'an 2:201). Our dua guide has the transliteration.
- Count carefully. Seven circuits, no more, no less. Use a tasbih, your fingers, or a phone counter — losing count in the crowd is the classic mistake.
- End where you began. After the seventh circuit, you're done walking. Cover the right shoulder again.
After tawaf: two rak'ahs and Zamzam
When the circuits are complete, pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim (the small glass enclosure near the Kaaba) if you can get close — anywhere in the mosque works if it's crowded. Then drink Zamzam water, making dua as you drink. The Prophet ﷺ said Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for (Ibn Majah) — so ask for what you need.
Common tawaf mistakes
- Losing count — the number one error. Count every circuit deliberately.
- Pushing toward the Black Stone. Touching or kissing it is Sunnah, but harming others to reach it is not. The gesture from a distance is completely valid.
- Walking clockwise or cutting through the Hijr. The Hijr Ismail (the semi-circular area) is part of the Kaaba — your circuits must go around it, not through it.
- Chatting through all seven circuits. It's worship, not a stroll — keep conversation minimal.
- Rushing. Seven calm, present circuits are worth more than seven hurried ones.
Which tawaf is this? The tawaf described here is Tawaf al-Umrah, part of the Umrah rites. There are other types (arrival tawaf, farewell tawaf), but the mechanics — seven counterclockwise circuits from the Black Stone — are the same.
Next in the sequence: sa'i between Safa and Marwa, the third step of Umrah.
