Umrah Rituals Step by Step: A Complete Beginner's Walkthrough

October 2026 · 9 min read

Umrah looks complicated from the outside — Arabic terms, a strict order, crowds of two million people. In reality it comes down to four steps, done in sequence, and the whole thing can take as little as three to four hours. Here's each step explained the way a first-timer needs it: what to do, what to say, and what to avoid.

Before anything: make ghusl (full ritual bath), trim your nails, and settle any debts or disputes you can. Enter the journey clean — inside and out. Women should read our guide to ihram rules for women before choosing what to wear.

Step 1

Ihram and the Talbiyah

Ihram is a state, not just clothing. You enter it at the miqat (the boundary around Makkah — your flight or agent will tell you when you're approaching it). Men change into two unstitched white cloths; women wear their normal modest dress.

Make the intention in your heart for Umrah, then begin reciting the Talbiyah — Labbayka Allahumma labbayk ("Here I am, O Allah, here I am") — and keep repeating it on the journey to the Haram. From this moment, the restrictions of ihram apply: no perfume, no cutting hair or nails, no hunting, no marital relations, and for men, no stitched clothing or covering the head.

Step 2

Tawaf — seven circuits of the Kaaba

Enter Masjid al-Haram, and when you first see the Kaaba, pause. Make dua — this is one of the moments pilgrims remember forever. Then begin at the Black Stone corner: face it, raise your right hand, say Bismillah, Allahu Akbar, and start walking counterclockwise with the Kaaba on your left.

Complete seven circuits. Men walk briskly (raml) for the first three and uncover the right shoulder (idtiba) during tawaf; women walk normally throughout. There is no fixed dua you must recite — use your own words, in any language. Afterwards, pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if you can, or anywhere in the mosque, then drink Zamzam water. Our full tawaf walkthrough covers every detail including common mistakes.

Seeing it helps more than reading about it: this first-person walkthrough follows the entire Umrah — tawaf, sa'i and all — exactly as you'll experience it.
Step 3

Sa'i — seven laps between Safa and Marwa

Head to the Masa'a (the enclosed walkway) and start at the hill of Safa. Face the Kaaba, raise your hands, and recite the verse Inna as-safa wal-marwata min sha'a'irillah (Qur'an 2:158), then begin walking toward Marwa. That's one lap; seven laps total, ending at Marwa.

Between the two green markers, men jog lightly; women walk normally throughout. Like tawaf, there's no fixed dua — remember the story of Hajar searching for water for her son Ismail, and make your own supplications. Our dua guide with transliteration gives you the key supplications for each stage.

Step 4

Hair cutting — and you're done

Men shave the head (halq — the more rewarding option) or trim the hair (taqsir). Women trim roughly a fingertip's length from the ends of their hair. The moment the hair is cut, you exit ihram: the restrictions lift, and your Umrah is complete.
