Umrah Visa Document Checklist for First-Time Pilgrims
The visa is the first real gate on the road to Umrah — and it's where most first-timer stress comes from. The good news: for many nationalities it's now simpler than it's ever been. Here's the complete document checklist and the two routes most pilgrims take.
The two routes
- Saudi tourist e-visa — citizens of eligible countries (including the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia and others) can apply online and perform Umrah on a tourist visa. Fast, independent, no agent needed.
- Umrah visa via an agent — the traditional route, and the required one for many nationalities (e.g. Pakistan, India, Bangladesh). A licensed agent arranges the visa along with flights and hotels. Always verify your agent is authorised — visa fraud is a real problem.
Not sure which applies to you? Check eligibility on the official visa portal or ask your country's Saudi embassy before paying anyone.
The document checklist
- Passport — valid at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, with blank pages
- Passport-style photographs — recent, white background (digital copy for e-visa)
- Completed visa application — online for e-visa, or through your agent
- Proof of accommodation — hotel bookings in Makkah (and Madinah)
- Return flight tickets
- Travel insurance — required or strongly recommended depending on route
- Vaccination certificates — requirements change; historically meningococcal (ACWY) was required, though Saudi authorities suspended the mandate in early 2025. Check the current requirement before you fly.
- Mahram documentation — women should check current rules for their nationality and route, as these have been relaxed in recent years but vary
The Nusuk app — download it before you fly
Saudi Arabia's official Nusuk platform is where you manage Umrah permits, book visits to the Rawdah in Madinah, and find official services. Install it, create your account, and link your visa before departure — doing this at the hotel on arrival wastes precious first-day hours.
New in 2026: the 1-year multiple-entry Umrah visa
Saudi Arabia has been expanding long-validity options, including a 1-year multiple-entry Umrah visa launched in mid-2026 for eligible nationalities (reported with up to 90 days' cumulative stay, paused during the Hajj season). If you're eligible, this is a game-changer for repeat visits — one application, a year of pilgrimages. Availability and eligibility vary by country, so confirm through official channels.
Golden rules: start your application 6–8 weeks before travel; never book non-refundable flights before the visa is approved; and get everything in writing from your agent. Visa rules shift with little notice — verify against official Saudi sources within two weeks of flying.
