What to Pack for Umrah: A First-Timer's Complete Checklist
Ask anyone who's been for Umrah what they'd do differently, and a surprising number say the same thing: they'd pack differently. Either they brought half their wardrobe and barely wore it, or they forgot something small — unscented soap, a second ihram — that became a real headache in Makkah.
Packing for Umrah isn't like packing for a holiday. You're preparing for worship in one of the busiest, hottest, most crowded places on earth, with specific religious requirements on what you wear and use. Here's the complete checklist, built for first-timers.
1. Documents — the non-negotiables
Keep these in your hand luggage, never in the checked bag. If your luggage goes missing (it happens), your trip doesn't have to fall apart with it.
- Passport with at least 6 months' validity beyond your travel dates
- Umrah visa or Saudi e-visa — printed copy plus a photo on your phone
- Flight tickets (return) and hotel confirmations
- Vaccination certificates if required at the time of travel — check current Saudi rules before you fly, as these change
- Photocopies of everything, plus digital scans saved to your phone and email
- A small amount of Saudi Riyals for arrival; cards work widely but cash helps for taxis and small shops
If you're unsure about the visa side, our Umrah visa document checklist walks through the two application routes step by step.
2. Ihram and clothing
For men: two sets of ihram (two unstitched white cloths each). Two, not one — you'll sweat through the first. Underneath, normal modest clothing for non-ihram hours, plus comfortable walking sandals that don't cover the top of the foot.
For women: there's no special ihram garment — your regular modest dress is your ihram. Pack 3–4 loose abayas or long dresses in breathable fabric, plus 5–10 lightweight hijabs, undercaps, and hijab pins. White is popular but not required; dark colours hide stains better. Read our full guide to ihram rules for women before you choose.
Everyone: comfortable, already-broken-in walking shoes or sandals. You will walk kilometres every day — between tawaf, sa'i, and simply getting around the Haram. New shoes are a blister guarantee.
3. Toiletries — the fragrance-free rule
While you're in the state of ihram, scented products are not allowed. That means your regular deodorant, shampoo and soap have to stay in the bag until you've completed Umrah. Pack:
- Fragrance-free soap, shampoo and deodorant (buy travel sizes — they're widely available online labelled "unscented" or "for ihram")
- Unscented moisturiser and lip balm — the Makkah air is dry
- Toothbrush and toothpaste, nail clippers, small scissors
- Sunblock (fragrance-free for ihram days)
- Tissues and wet wipes
4. Medicines and first aid
Crowds, heat, and a new climate — most pilgrims catch at least a cold. Pack paracetamol, cold and flu tablets, rehydration salts, plasters, antiseptic cream, and any prescription medication in its original packaging with a doctor's note. A small first-aid kit weighs almost nothing and saves pharmacy trips at midnight.
5. Prayer essentials
- A lightweight, foldable prayer mat
- A tasbih (prayer beads) for dhikr during quiet moments
- Dua cards — this is the one people forget and regret. When you're standing in front of the Kaaba, you don't want to be trying to remember the right words. Our bundle includes 22 printable dua cards with Arabic, transliteration and translation, sized to carry in a pocket.
6. Money, tech and the small stuff
- Phone + charger + power bank (you'll use your phone for the Nusuk app, maps and photos all day)
- Universal travel adapter — Saudi Arabia uses 220V with UK-style plugs
- A small drawstring bag for the Haram (phone, wudu-friendly sandals, dua cards, water)
- Sunglasses, a small umbrella for shade, and an empty water bottle for Zamzam
- Snacks for travel days — dates, nuts, biscuits
What NOT to pack
The golden rule: pack for 7 days, not 30. Laundry services are cheap and everywhere in Makkah and Madinah. Overpacking is the single most common first-timer mistake — you'll be carrying that suitcase through airports, hotel lobbies and Haram crowds.
- Too many clothes. Three to four outfits plus ihram is plenty for a 10-day trip.
- Scented products for your ihram days — they'll sit unused.
- Valuables you don't need. Leave the good watch and extra jewellery at home.
- A rigid plan. Crowds, prayer times and energy levels will reshape your days. Build in rest.
Once the bag is packed, the next thing to get right is the rituals themselves — our step-by-step Umrah walkthrough covers the four steps in plain language, so nothing surprises you on the day.
